Ian Halliday

  • Member, FRA Board of Directors for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
  • Former Chief Executive, UK Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council; President, European Science Council

Professor Ian Halliday is a theoretical particle physicist by training. After an Edinburgh (MA, MSc) and Cambridge (PhD) education Halliday spent time as a Research Fellow at Princeton and Cambridge and then spent 25 years at Imperial College rising up the academic ranks to a Chair. He accepted a position at Swansea University to Chair the Physics Department, then advanced up the research rankings and started the Graduate School.

Halliday became CEO of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) and remained so for 7 years. In addition, Halliday served on the CERN Council for those 7 years. Halliday arranged for the UK to join the main European astronomy research collaboration ESO (the European Southern Observatory). He also spent 6 years on the European Commission’s senior “European Research Advisory Board (EURAB)” within DG Research.

Currently, Halliday is the CEO of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), pulling eight university physics departments to work together, and also President of the European Science Foundation (ESF). Halliday is a member of both the Board of the Fermi Research Alliance (FRA), which runs Fermilab, the main US particle physics lab near Chicago, and of the Japanese Government’s “World Premier Institute (WPI)” program. He also serves on the HEFCW’s (Welsh University Funding Council) “Reconfiguration and Collaboration Panel.”
