Science Strategy & Approach
Governance
- Create a world-class Board of Directors led by UChicago President Robert Zimmer and including URA university presidents and national/international science and industry leaders.
- Provide single point accountability and oversight.
Corporate Resources
- Exploit resources from Illinois universities and the 90 URA universities to expand joint appointments, enhance FNAL-related outreach activities, improve business operations, provide education opportunities for staff and their children, and extend the reach of science-education programs.
ILC Capture
- Establish an ILC Program Office to lead ILC R&D and bid-to-host activities.
- Leverage the connections of FRA-affiliated organizations to promote the ILC to the State of Illinois.
World-Class Scientists & Engineers
- Expand joint appointments and FNAL particle physics and astrophysics programs using UChicago resources.
- Increase participation of foreign scientists, including implementation of a new International Fellows program.
- Implement an Organization and Human Asset Plan (OHAP) to ensure that FNAL has optimum workforce/skill combination at all times.
- Expand the Education Program's reach to increase numbers of future scientists.
Communication
- Strengthen partnership and open communication between FNAL and the HEP community.
- Strengthen the InterAction Collaboration; provide a focus for media information about the LHC.
Collaboration
- Create the FNAL-ANL Laboratory Collaboration Council (LCC) to support continuous-improvement initiatives; create LCC R&D and Technology Transfer Working Groups to develop the industrial base for the ILC.
- Establish the FNAL Accelerator Physics Center (APC) and Argonne Accelerator Institute (AAI) to coordinate accelerator research efforts.
- Create a center for data analysis—the LHC Physics Center (LPC)—that leverages FNAL's state-of-the-art Feynman and Grid Computing Centers.
- Elevate the Particle Astrophysics Center (PAC) to a new level in the organization to leverage ties between URA and UChicago and attract world-class leadership.
- Apply capabilities of UChicago/ANL Computation Institute and ANL experts in handling large data sets and Grid software.
